Knee Osteoarthritis in many cases may be considered as part of the normal wear and tear process which affects many of our joints. Particularly affected are the large weight-bearing joints of our lower limbs such as the hips, knees and ankles. Often, patients will consider an injection as an effective treatment for pain relief if conservative management has not worked, to avoid resorting to surgery such as an invasive knee replacement procedure.
Osteoarthritis (OA) of the knee typically presents with pain and stiffness after long periods without moving, such as first thing in the morning or after sitting for long periods. Patients often times describe ‘crepitus’ which is noise or clicking coming from the joint. Activities such as standing for long periods, going up and down stairs and bending the knee beyond 90° (right angles) such as when squatting or crouching down become most difficult. Osteoarthritis of the knees can be very debilitating and can have a severe impact on your enjoyment of activities and generally your quality of life, as activities of daily living like shopping and household chores can become very difficult.
